Fashion Beyond Clothing: Its Impact on Society and Culture

Fashion is a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour. Fashion refers to the prevailing styles of clothing, hairstyles, decoration, and behavior that are widely accepted or considered popular at a given time. The word fashion is defined in dictionaries as a consumer mindset that determines the trends of society and influences what they believe they should consume. 

Fashion, in the modern sense, has become closely associated with the textile and clothing industry, but its origins are broader. The term derives from the Latin word modo, which means "immediately" or "just now." In Italian, the word for fashion refers to the desire for adornment, the need for change, or a temporary innovation that enters social life through the desire for decoration or novelty. 

Another meaning of fashion is societal preferences that are dominant for a certain period, often representing excessive and widespread enthusiasm for something. Dictionaries define fashion in several ways. The first definition is as follows: A temporary innovation entering social life through the need for change or the aspiration for adornment, which closely mirrors its Italian meaning. According to dictionaries, another definition is: The form that is temporarily in line with novelty and social favor. 

These definitions suggest that the concept of fashion has shifted over time from its original meaning. Fashion, in its classic sense, no longer refers solely to the popular clothing preferences and trends of the time. Today, for most people, fashion is understood primarily as clothing, accessories, and personal style. However, fashion is not just linked to the textile industry; it also spans art, music, theater, literature, food, interior design, architecture, gardening, television, cinema, and essentially any cultural or creative domain that stimulates the senses. This broadened meaning of fashion shows its influence not just on appearance, but on lifestyle and culture as a whole. 

Historically, the style of clothing characteristic of a particular era was often recorded as fashion. Clothing habits were used synonymously with the mood of the time. In this sense, fashion becomes a cultural expression tied to society’s broader norms. Other sources define fashion as the traditional use of clothing, labels, invitations, and other elements, as well as behaviors—particularly those adopted by elite or fashionable groups to establish their distinction and identity within society. 

Fashion, in its general use, refers to the rising popularity of a specific clothing style that reflects the preferences of people during a certain period, primarily related to clothing. While fashion traditionally refers to popular clothing styles, today, in some regions, it often indicates the clothing choices of high society, celebrities, or influencers. Originally, fashion referred to changing trends across multiple domains. The reason why fashion is often associated with popular clothing today is due to the substantial investments made by the clothing industry, which has shaped our current understanding of fashion. This particular use is not limited to a single culture or country, as the concept of fashion is also widely used in many societies to describe the collective preferences in clothing


The Unspoken Meaning of Fashion (Should Fashion Define Our Choices?

Fashion changes through a process of supply and demand. It evolves in response to social, political, economic, technological, and cultural changes happening worldwide. Fashion is influenced by a variety of factors, including global events, emerging technologies, shifts in cultural attitudes, and economic trends

The key point here is who and how fashion, in its modern sense—clothing trends—is guided and determined. What is the unifying force that makes hundreds of designers simultaneously declare, "This year, these styles are in fashion," or "This summer, these colors will be popular," or "These trends will dominate next fall"? 

In fashion, the primary influencers are the large clothing corporations and big companies operating within the textile industry. The most significant factors influencing contemporary fashion (in terms of the clothing industry) are the colors and fabrics that were fashionable in previous years. Once a color or fabric gains popularity, it tends to reappear in future collections, often with slight modifications. This cyclical nature of fashion is due to the way large companies drive trends. For example, let’s say red is the trending color this year. If fashion houses and manufacturers produce an abundance of red fabrics and threads, these materials may not be fully consumed in the current season. These unused fabrics are not discarded; instead, they are stored in warehouses until red becomes fashionable again. The key factor is the remaining quantity of fabric. If a large quantity of red fabric is left over, it is likely to become fashionable again sooner, as companies aim to minimize the cost of storage

The takeaway from this is that fashion should not be given undue importance or be taken too seriously. Fashion trends are influenced by economic factors, business strategies, and corporate agendas, and are often more about consumer demand and industry dynamics than about individual style or creativity.
